Day 3: Unexpected Road Trip After Hanauma Bay and La’ie Point

Exploring Laie Point: A Must-See Destination

After our spa experience, we were eager to explore Route 82 near La’ie Point, where the scenery is stunning and the activities are plentiful.

After an amazing morning snorkeling at Hanauma Bay, we were totally wiped out—but in the best possible way. 🐠💙

We made a quick stop at a cozy spa nearby to recharge, and then we headed towards La’ie Point for breathtaking views. Soaking in the beautiful surroundings was exactly what we needed. 💆‍♀️🌺

Feeling refreshed and ready for more adventures, we decided to take a spontaneous mini road trip up the coast to La’ie Point! 🚗🌴

But first things first—food! 😋 Luckily, Waikiki has tons of great food trucks where you can grab a quick, delicious meal at reasonable prices.

If you’re around Ala Moana Blvd or Kuhio Ave, don’t miss spots like Giovanni’s Shrimp Truck 🦐, Elena’s Filipino Food 🇵🇭, or even dessert trucks serving refreshing shave ice 🍧. Perfect for a quick energy boost!

Our original plan was a bit ambitious:
La’ie Point ➡️ Sunset Beach Park ➡️ Shark’s Cove ➡️ Laniakea Beach
— all in one afternoon.

A Little About Route 82: Kamehameha Highway 🌺

Route 82, more famously known as Kamehameha Highway, runs along Oahu’s stunning North Shore. 🚗✨

This legendary road is named after King Kamehameha I, the great Hawaiian leader who unified the islands in the early 1800s. 🏝️ It was originally developed to connect different villages along the rugged coastline, making travel and trade possible.

Today, it’s one of the most scenic drives in Hawaii, featuring a perfect mix of dramatic cliffs, lush forests, and breathtaking ocean views. 🌊🌴

You’ll pass sleepy surf towns, local farms, and beaches famous for massive winter waves and laid-back vibes.

(Fun Tip! 🏄‍♂️ If you visit between November and February, you might catch the world’s top surfers competing at places like Banzai Pipeline!)

Waikiki vs. Route 82: Why the Sun Looks Different 🌞

When we reached the coast near Route 82, the sunset felt completely different from the ones we’d seen at Waikiki Beach.

In Waikiki, sunsets are soft and pastel, with the sun slowly dipping behind a skyline of hotels and palm trees. 🌇🌴 It’s dreamy and romantic.

But along Route 82? It’s wild and dramatic. 🌅🔥

Because there are no tall buildings and way less light pollution, the horizon is wide open. The sun looks massive against the endless sky and rugged coastline. Plus, the mist from the crashing waves adds a magical golden haze, making the sun seem even bigger and closer than it really is. (This is called the “moon illusion” phenomenon!)

Watching the sun sink into the ocean while surfers danced across the waves was honestly breathtaking. 🏄‍♂️🌊 It felt raw and untamed, like a secret show just for us.

Quick Tips for Your Route 82 Adventure 🚗🌺

  • Start Early: 🌤️ If you want to hit multiple spots like La’ie Point, Sunset Beach, and Shark’s Cove, try to start before noon. Otherwise, you’ll be chasing the sunset!
  • Bring Cash: 🏪 Some local shops and stands along the way are cash-only.
  • Watch the Waves: 🌊 Always check surf reports. The North Shore’s waves can get huge, especially in winter!
  • Drive Carefully: 🚗 Some parts of the road are narrow and winding, so take it slow and enjoy the view.
  • Pack Snacks and Water: 🥤 You’ll pass through areas with limited food options once you leave major towns.

Even though our plan didn’t go perfectly—realistically, we only made it to La’ie Point and one mystery beach 😆
